It’s available on Nokia’s own website for $649 USD, but I’m sure that you can find a slightly better deal somewhere else. the Nokia N900 is described as a touchscreen computer that has a maximum of a 48GB capacity. The phone has a slide out QWERTY keyboard for text entry and is fronted by a large touchscreen.

On Amazon’s US website here they’re selling the N900 for $582.99 USD, but the release date hasn’t been posted yet.

From the day Nokia announced its latest smart phone model, the N97 at the Nokia world 2008 in Barcelona, the battle between two of perhaps the biggest companies with the most ardent fan following had begun.

Speculations were rife back then about the features that N97 would come packed with and how the iPhone would stand in comparison to it. Now that the N97 is here, it is only befitting to begin comparing the two. iPhone has had a stranglehold in the smartphone market. Even the arrival of G1 didn’t do much towards taking significant amount of market share from the iPhone.

With regards to the physical measure, the N97 is slated at 117.2 x 55.3 x 15.9mm (LxWxD) as compared to the iPhone 3G’s 115.5 x 62.1 x 12.3mm (LxWxD). The N97 weighs about 150g while the iPhone 3G weights about 133g. The iPhone 3G boasts of a 3.5 inch screen at a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. The touchscreen facility of the iPhone is provided by a capacitive touch screen. The Nokia N97 on the other hand has a 3.5 inch screen at a resolution of 640 x 360 pixels, which implies that at the same screen size, the N97 is better with its better screen resolution.

What makes Nokia N97 formidable is the fact that it is shipped with a fully functional slide out QWERTY keyboard to go with the virtual keyboard. Such a fully functional QWERTY keyboard is significant in that it helps in keying in longer texts such as sending emails. The iPhone 3G though, lacks such a keyboard and the users have to rely only on the virtual on screen keyboard.

The multimedia features offered by the Nokia N97 and the iPhone 3G are directly influenced by their respective companies’ services. The iPhone 3G S provides access to the iTunes store which has a huge range of content while the N97 provides its users with the access to the Nokia Music Store for their music needs. This feature apart, there is very little to choose from with both supporting popular video and audio formats such as MP3, AAC, MPEG4 etc. N97 though, has a slight bit of an advantage over iPhone in that it supports WMA, Windows Media 9 and Flash Lite.

The Nokia N97 comes equipped with a camera on the front for video calls and a five megapixel camera with LED flash and video capabilities. The videos are shot at a decent 30fps. In comparison, the iPhone 3G only offers a 2 megapixel camera without flash and without any support to record videos. The recently launched version of the iPhone, iPhone 3GS is an improvement over the earlier versions in that it has a 3 megapixel camera which has features such as auto focus and video and voice recording features.

On the navigation front, the iPhone 3G makes use of A-GPS and Google Maps while the Nokia N97 has A-GPS and an electronic compass to go with Nokia Maps for the navigational requirements of the users.

Internet and communicational features on both phones include HSDPA and WiFi connectivity with the N97 supporting Bluetooth 2.0 and support for Flash Lite 3.0 which implies that web pages can be rendered more completely on a N97 as compared to the iPhone 3G which lacks any kind of support for Flash content.

Cost of iPhone 3G S and Nokia N 97 in US:

The base price of iPhone 3G 8GB variant has been greatly reduced recently and is now available at $99 at the Apple store while the price of the iPhone 3GS 16GB and the 32GB variants is fixed at $199 and $299 respectively. These prices though are subsidized by the network providers and therefore cost less. The Nokia N97 is priced at $600

Today, history has been made, in the minds of Nokia. At a conference in Spain, Nokia has announced their new smart phone, the Nokia N97. So why is this smart phone getting all the bloggers in a jolt? According to Nokia, this is the real smart phone.

According to Nokia’s blog, the Nokia N97 is ”the world’s most advanced mobile computer, which will transform the way people connect to the Internet and to each other. Designed for the needs of Internet-savvy consumers, the Nokia N97 combines a large 3.5″ touch display with a full QWERTY keyboard, providing an ‘always open’ window to favorite social networking sites and Internet destinations. Nokia’s flagship Nseries device introduces leading technology – including multiple sensors, memory, processing power and connection speeds – for people to create a personal Internet and share their ’social location.’”

So what are some of the pros that Nokia has over Apple’s iPhone? For one, real video can be played, including flash. It also comes with a 5 megapixel camera (killing the iPhone’s 1 meg camera). The OS has been quoted to be the most powerful OS on any smart phone yet. The Nokia N97 also has DVD-quality video capture, and tons of storage.

The cons? According to Gizmodo, the downsides are ”the N97 is aimed at Europe and Asia first. So big ballers in Moscow and Macau can expect to be toting an N97 sometime in the ‘first half of 2009,’ with a U.S. release (with the appropriate 3G bands) to follow ’soon after.’ In Europe it’ll run a hefty $695 unsubsidized.”
Exciting stuff, but we’re still not sure it can beat the iPhone, which is rapidly amassing a monster games catalogue of its own.

Have a peep at Jaakko’s interview below, and give us your thoughts in the comments section:

Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be among the first devices to support Comes With Music, Nokia’s groundbreaking service which offers one year of unlimited access to the entire Nokia Music Store catalogue.
Taking advantage of touch screen technology, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic introduces the ‘Media Bar’, a handy drop down menu that provides direct access to music and entertainment, including favourite tracks, videos and photos. The Media Bar also offers a direct link to the web and to online sharing.

Because the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic supports Flash content, individuals can surf the entire web, not just pieces of it. In addition, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic offers all the music essentials, including a graphic equalizer, 8GB memory for up to 6000 tracks and support for all main digital music formats, and a 3.5mm jack. Built-in surround sound stereo speakers offer the industry’s most powerful sound.

‘As Nokia’s first mass-market device with a touch screen, the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic turns a ‘user interface’ into a ‘human interface’ by truly putting people first. For example, we’ve introduced the Nokia Contacts Bar, which is like a digital RSS feed on your life,’ said Harlow. ‘By adding the benefits of touch screen technology to S60, the world’s leading smartphone interface, Nokia is taking the familiar and giving it a human touch. We have used touch technology where it really adds value such as the Contacts Bar, Media Bar and clever shortcuts from the homescreen to menu items such as calendar, profiles and clock.’

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic also features a 3.2 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens and, with a single touch, images or videos can be shared via a favorite online community, such as Share on Ovi, Flickr, or Facebook. Music playlist song titles can also be shared through Bluetooth, MMS or online sharing.

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic will be available worldwide beginning in the fourth quarter of 2008 for an estimated retail price of 279 EUR before taxes and subsidies. The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic featuring Comes With Music will be available early next year. Pricing details to follow.

Leading in cellphone industry. Nokia presented Nokia N85. has finally presented, just a few hours ago, its two new Nseries smartphones: the N85 and N79. You might have already known that the N85 is a slider while the N79 is a candybar, but now we have all the details about the handsets as well as official pictures with them.

Both the new Nseries devices are packing lots of high-end features, but the N85 will probably lure the highest number of mobile users.The only thing that can be seen as a drawback when it comes to the N85 is its look, which highly resembles the one of N81 and N96. Sure, the handset?s design is far from being a ?bad one?, but consumers might have expected a bit more from Nokia. And by more I mean something really new, not a design that can only make you say ?oh, I?ve seen this before.?

Anyway, looks aside, the N85 is undoubtedly worthy of the Nseries brand. The new smartphone comes with a wide range of entertainment-related capabilities,including a 5 Megapixel camera that brings Carl Zeiss optics, Tessar lens, auto focus, dual LED flash, geotagging, 20x digital zoom and VGA video recording.

Furthermore, the N85 features a 2.6 inch TFT display with 16.7 million colors, 320 x 240 pixels, brightness control and ambient light detector, accelerometer for automatic image rotation, secondary camera for video calls, Wi-Fi, GPS, A-GPS, Nokia Maps, Adobe Flash Lite 3.0, Nokia Web browser, Adobe Reader, Nokia Nseries music player (supporting MP3, AAC, eAAC, eAAC and WMA), 3D stereo speakers, dedicated music keys, a 3.5 mm headset jack, UPnP music streaming, FM radio with RDS, FM transmitter, N-gage gaming controls, digital stereo microphone, text-to-speech and Symbian 9.3 S60 3rd Edition (with Feature Pack 2).

The N85 has only 74MB of internal memory, but an 8GB microSD card is included in the package – enough for about anything you might want to store on the phone.Nokia has embedded into the N85 more than 10 N-Gage free-to-try games: Asphalt 3, Hooked On: Creatures of the Deep, Bounce, Reset Generation, FIFA 08, Worlds Series of Poker, Midnight Pool, Tetris, Snakes Subsonic, Space Impact, System Rush, Sims 2: Pets, Brain Challenge, Mile High Pinball and Block Breaker Deluxe. One of them, at user?s choice, can be kept for free, while any of the others must be acquired from the N-Gage website in order to be played in full-version.

The new Nseries weighs 128 grams and, when closed, it measures 103 x 50x 16 millimeters. Its battery is a 1200 mAh Li-Ion one that should be able to offer:

up to 6.9 hours of GSM talk-time / 4.5 hours of 3G talk-time;

up to 363 hours of talk-time (either on 2G or on 3G networks);

up to 30 hours of music playback;

up to 7 hours of gameplay;

up to 172 hours of Wi-Fi usage;

or up to 6 hours of VoIP usage.

?The Nokia N85 was created to be more than the sum of its parts, offering a complete mobile entertainment package designed for connecting, sharing and discovering. The iconic Nokia Nseries dual slider design has evolved to become smaller and sleeker while integrating the newest features and services to deliver the best mobile experience to date,? states Juha-Pekka Sipponen, director, Nokia Nseries. According to the Finnish company, the N85 will be commercially available starting October, for a retail price of around 450 Euros (660 USD).

Though word leaked about two new N-series models, Nokia yesterday officially announced a total of three new phones: the Nokia N96, Nokia N85, and Nokia N79. All these three Symbian smartphones offer high-end multimedia features.

1. Nokia N96:

As I stated in my previous post The N96 is a high-end multimedia device with a whopping 16GB of internal memory, which is extendible to 24GB through a microSD card. The phone is equipped with a 5MP camera and can record videos at up to 30 frames per second. Besides an integrated music player, it has a stereo FM radio and 3.5mm headphone jack.

Among other features, there?s Wi-Fi, integrated Bluetooth and A-GPS. The Nokia N96 will cost around $750 to $800.Nokia N85

2. Nokia N85:

The N85 looks similar to the N81 but comes with a 2.6-inch OLED screen instead of a QVGA display. The phone is optimized for gaming and will come preloaded with 10 N-Gage games. It also gives you the ability to use the combination of integrated GPS and the 5-megapixel camera to geotag photos. The handset also has Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.0, and 3G and will cost around $600 to $650.

3.Nokia N79:

This handset has an interesting design twist as it comes with a total of three interchangeable Xpress-on smart covers: white, red and espresso brown. On the back of the covers, there exists a sensor that will automatically change the phone?s wallpaper once you attach the plate. The orientation also changes automatically from wide to tall formats using a built-in orientation sensor. The N79 has multimedia features similar to the two previous devices. It comes with 50MB of internal memory and is likely to have a price tag of around $500 to $550.

All these three phone are expected to ship in Q4. They will be sold as unlocked phones.
