Smart Phones of today

toughts on the motorola Razr2 v8

The Motorola Razr2 v8 , pretty long name , i guess it overruns the length of its features :)

the-razr2v8.jpg this phone is a sequel to very popular , shiny/glossy Motorola v3i. there is no prize for guessing that it is shiny/glossy too. i can only hope that this phone wouldnt be available in ‘pink’ colour , like the v3i, which actually sold well(god knows how)
i never expect fractures from Motorola and it never disappoints me, so once again no useful feature to talk about. some people expected animated menu(guys how could you?) well the menu icons still look ‘good’ old , outdated. This time Motorola has got a surprise for you, yes a half assed touch-screen implementation. imagine using the ‘linux’ with touch-screen… ‘horrified already’? now pay for that feature by getting a Razr2. The user interface is simply annoying. The 2 mega-pixel camera is no good, when compared to nokia6233. camera works well only in broad daylight and should be able to hold the phone steady like a trained sniper. Well there aren’t much features to talk about but one thing worth mentioning is that GPRS really works this time, but to balance the things motorolla razr still has ‘non-tactile’ cheap calculator type keys :) this phone has a wi-fi port, but it means that i can browse the net(only xhtml) at indoor places. why would anyone use this phone for browsing while at home? apart from that i want to thank motorola for not including 3G technology, no third party applications and for the inconvenience caused by not including expendable memory card slot

still wondering why motorola is down to number three with just 13 percent of the total market share(current market leader is nokia, with 41percent of the global market share)

If you liked the design of Razr2 then get an N76 to use the thousands of free java and sis apps supported by nokia…

BlackBerry 8830

I am a little behind in writing this one – sorry! Last August I grew increasingly frustrated with Sprint due to poor phone service and awful customer service. I started shopping for a replacement phone and decided to finally go for a smartphone, PDA-phone or BlackBerry.

blackberry8830.jpg

I ended up choosing the BlackBerry 8830 from Verizon and have absolutely loved the decision.

In choosing this new device I was looking to replace an aging (and outdated) Compaq iPaq hadheld PDA that served me well for almost nine years. I was looking to not only have phone, but data, calendar and address book functions available in one device. Among the devices considered: the Cingular/AT&T 8525, the Sprint Mogul and the T-Mobile Sidekick.

After a good deal on research online I focused on the BlackBerry. Two of my good friends both had the device and sterling reviews from each sealed the deal.

Some highlights of the BlackBerry 8830: Excellent service and call quality, ease of use, reliability and battery life. Some low points: no reset button, low speaker volume and learning curve transitioning from PocketPC/Windows Devices to BlackBerry.

Out of the box the 8830 is a stunning device in a smart, lightweight handheld package. A full QWERTY keyboard sits underneath an ample screen. Keys on the keyboard are slightly raised and easy to press. I have larger hands and have noticed it difficulty to hit the correct keys at times, but I have not found it to be a major problem.

The included BlackBerry software of browser, email client, calendar application, etc. is adequate. I have read many reviews of people adding new browser software, like Opera, but I have no problem with the included broswer. There is an included Map/Directions program but I did add the Google suite of mobile applications which included Google Maps. I use both and find little difference between the two.

Data speed on the Verizon network in my area (Central Jersey) are fantastic. Email setup was a snap and I was able to add email accounts for my personal business and accounts from Yahoo, Google Gmail and MSN Hotmail. I did have to pay for the upgrade to paid service on Hotmail to access it via the phone.

The built-in calendar and personal software (tasks, notes, etc.) took a little getting used to having come from a Windows PDA. At first I did not like using the calendar at all. Now it is a breeze. Sync with my PC has also not been a problem.

The phone itself is quite durable. I have dropped it several times – not trying to drop it mind you, but I have. It sports some battle scars now but functions just the same. I am sure there are some more technical and thorough reviews out there but I can tell you that through real world, every day use this has become one of my favorite devices of all time.

Nokia PC Phone

Nokia has just announced the Nokia PC Phone. No, it?s not a new smartphone, rather it?s a software application that allows users to control their Nokia cell phones and smart phones through their home computer.

nokiapcphone.jpg

That?s right. Now Nokia users can now view their call log and messages, manage their contacts, send SMS messages, even receive notifications of incoming calls and choose whether or not to answer it over their PC.

Easy to download and install, the software connects to the users? Nokia smartphone or cell phone via Bluetooth or data cables.

Currently the software in the beta stage of development, meaning that it does still have its bugs to iron out. For example, the Nokia PC Phone works well on Internet Explorer but not Mozilla Firefox yet. And the SMS text messaging features are still quite clunky and unresponsive.

There?s little doubt, however, that a company with such a consistently impressive track record like Nokia has will sort through all of these minor problems soon enough and release another impeccable product in their later version Nokia PC Phone.

Download the Nokia PC Phone at BetaLabs.

iPhone vs the competition

The year 2007 saw a revolution in cell phones when Apple launched its iPhone. Having set the standard, other companies scrambled to develop a new and better iPhone-like cell phone to compete.

Although many new features were brought to Motorola and Nokia cell phones, there are still gaps to be filled.

However, in spite of the fact that these companies are competing to develop the ?ultimate cell phone?, what actually occurs is that each model serves different needs, and thus different types of users.

As it is, although the objective is to obtain the biggest portion of the cell market, each company has its own segment and specializes in its own features.

Lets look at the specs of the major cell phones from Apple, Motorola and Nokia:
